My take from the land of 2 tracks for many generations now. They followed the horse here. In the 80's a 150 hp steel track would pull the same load as a 300 hp articulated tractor. It is similar today that a lower hp 2 track will do similar work of a higher hp 4 track. I'm not talking mud though.

There are lots of farms here with the little 2 cylinder Johnny Poppers. They was a very popular tractor in its day. It was simple and did far more work for its size than a tired tractor. They are still very valuable to this day. We had one.

Several years ago I bought an ASV skid steer and it is far more versatile than the Johnny Popper. I think the skid steer would more fit what your are talking about. Mine is bi-directional so you can put the loader on either end. It also has a 3-point attachment and a pto so it can run attachments just like a tractor. Receiver hitches at each end to pull equipment.

Converting a skid steer to do more tractor work because it has hydraulics and hydrostat would be the simplest solution.
