If pasture farrowing produced pork cheaper (all costs including labor/cost of living), it would take over pork production and Neiman wouldn't have to pay a premium to get people to produce it.
Just been told that the UK national pig herd is in the region of 330,000 sows with up to 60% of them outside. Our maritime climate will help this. Before you ask, there is no, zero, zip, nothing subsidies for pigs, but a huge amount of animal welfare and environmental legislation that affect how pig slurry is handled, stored and applied. Slurry isn't a factor on outdoor units. |
