Southern Indiana | Got the spring pairs worked and turned out on Tue and Wednesday and all went well. Figured yesterday weaning a group of fall calves would be a piece of cake. Even told my wife I didn't think we would need her to help which made her smile. Spoke to soon.
This group of cows is the easiest herd we have and usually when they hear the mule they will come running expecting a treat. They had been on grass for about a week but had it pretty picked down and figured they would be looking for something new. They were in a nice group by the water tank but didnt want to move away from it towards the barn. Finally they started moving and about 3/4 of them followed me into the lot and started munching on some alfalfa, but the rest decided to stay on the hillside under the cedar trees where they have all kinds of escape routes and tactical advantages. By the time they made it back to the water tank my wife had the first bunch penned and had joined us. We did manage to get them into the pasture the cows were supposed to end up in after weaning thinking they would go from there into the barn lot. Wrong. After about a half hour of frustration I said enough. We have to accept honourable defeat this time. They have everything they want and are interested in nothing we have. They are now next to where they should be now which is progress, so we will try it another day. Blame it on the moon and not having a good cattle dog.
My vet says our cows are about the best to work with he has seen, but not this day. | |
