Eastern NE KS | Feedlot heifer concentration has peaked at 39%. Recent COF report said 37.6% heifers. This equates to 160k fewer heifers compared to 39%. Historical low for heifers on feed run about 32% when retention is in full swing.
For me, this indicator will be confirmed or discarded in the next 2 cof reports with heifer percent listed.
My herd is marginally shrinking due to favorable cattle prices pulling aged cows with any issue. This gradual trend needs to stop and maybe even reverse to keep pastures full. My current plan is save all heifer calves from S'25 - less the late born. Prep and expose for 30 days for 2027 calving. But open heifers will be sold as yearlings. | |
