West Central Illinois | Got a new one, moved cows up the hill to their next paddock and was missing a pair. So i walk back and this cow never knows the meaning of hustle but her and her baby are making their way over so I leave them alone. Got mineral feeder amd water setup then went back to check on the pair and cows bawling at her calf who won't cross the creek. Silly me thinks, "no big deal I'll just nudge him across surely a bit of pressure on him will make him cross over to mom. Calfs 1 week old, not spooky at all til today amd this calf just takes off in a dead run goes 150 yd and squirts through a 5 barb fence like nothing. Now he's in the last paddock where they been then last I saw him he was still running and headed toward fence which is only 2 hot wires in that field then nothing for a mile after that.
I let cow back out to see if her bawling can coerce him back over from wherever he was but nothing. Been bawling all day and searching from what I saw. I've covered about 4 mile on foot on edge of timber and in the tillable nearby haven't seen him.
How far will a baby calf like that go? Any chance he comes through when he gets hungry back to mom? For all I know he could be 400-1000 yd away. Never had happen like that but usually if a cow misplaced their calf i let her out in that patch to find it amd it works out. This cows been here couple months do not gonna let her out in no fenced open country not sure her homing beacon is strong at this point. | |
