Problem is after so many failed attempts it might lock you out for an extended period of time. After enough consecutive failed attempts it might even erase the data (pictures, contacts, text messages, etc) from the phone. Just depends on who set it up and what is enabled or disabled.
Can the stroke victim communicate at all? Even being able to point or answer yes/no questions would help you to narrow down what it might be or if he/she has it wrote down anywhere.
