The slide below is from the WI Agribusiness Classic back in January and is a summary of 3 years of work Matt Ruark (UW-Madison Soils Dept) did. One of the trials in his dataset is on one of my clients dairy farm. They use cereal rye after corn silage and were gracious enough to host one of the on-farm trials and apply manure according to what he needed on plots with and without covers. Matt, etal went on to superimpose small plot N rate trials on these fields. I believe 8 N rates replicated 4X to develop a response curve. I suspect more info can be found at the UW website.

This agrees quite well with what Andy already stated. Likely half your N has been taken up and it will not be released for the current corn crop.
