Chesapeake, VA
Full-time employee wanted:
Come farm 30 minutes from the beach, 4 hours from the mountains, and 20 minutes from multiple cities. We are a 2400 acre row crop farm located in Chesapeake, VA. We grow corn, winter wheat, and soybeans
(no livestock
). Currently it is me as well as one full-time, one part-time, and various seasonal workers. We are all fairly young, easy to get along with, and eager to work. I am not the type to ask you to do anything I don’t do myself. I am a completely hands-on manager, while trying not to micromanage. Our equipment ranges from a few years old to the build date being rusted away.
Necessary:
1. Well versed using electronics. Example: text messaging, using phone apps to manage maintenance work orders, the knowledge of or ability to quickly learn GPS and application software
(currently using Greenstar
).
2. Experience driving tractors and large trucks.
3. Basic mechanical knowledge and abilities. Example: Be able to replace a blown hydraulic line on your own.
4. General understanding of the function and concepts of the equipment.
(example: how a rate controller works
)
5. Drivers license.
6. Motivation beyond the paycheck, an actual desire to be in agriculture and motivated partly by the satisfaction from the end result of our work.
7. Physical fitness to perform general farm labor.
8. Willingness to work wide ranging and unpredictable hours, often on short notice.
Preferred:
1. Experience driving tractor trailers
2. High level of mechanical skills
3. Experience operating planters, combines, or sprayers.
4. The math skills necessary to mix spray loads or projecting seed needs over given acreages.
5. Ability to troubleshoot mechanical/functionality problems.
Not necessary:
1. CDL
2. Your own tools
3. Degree or schooling
Compensation could be wide ranging depending on the experience mentioned, and would be negotiated on a case by case basis. Housing is not typically provided in this area, nor do I personally have any available. However, I realize that most qualified individuals would need to relocate, and am prepared to assist in that in whatever way necessary for the right employee. I do not see it being beneficial for either party to relocate someone for under roughly 50k salary, nor do I see any level of expertise being worth over 80k
(currently
) to our operation. Ideally would like to find someone that would like to stick around for 15 years or more, knowing that their role and compensation will grow.
