In my mind, a family farm is generally a smaller operation in which the entire operation in owned AND operated by the family. We milk around 100 cows, raise all of our own replacements along with 40-50 beefers per year, grow every bite of feed these animals consume, and sell grain. We farm about 1,000 acres along with close to 200 acres of pasture. My dad (owner), my brother and I (future owners) are full time. My younger brother and retired uncle are part time. The five of us do ALL the work. I think that holds up to the definition of "family farm" that John and Jane Q. Public think of when picturing a family farm. We hold meetings around the breakfast table or bulk tank, not in offices of over the phone.
