Subject: ATV mounted calf catchers?

Denhoff,ND right in the center of the State
Was thinking about building or buying a ATV mounted calf catcher, what brands do you guys have and how well do they work, are they strong enough to handle a 1400-1600 lb. mad cow? Do they pull hard and is the ATV hard to handle and manuver with it attached? Our cows are gentle for the most part, but a few of them can be real bitches when they calve thing is which one is it gonna be, sure wish I was in a pen that they couldnt get me in while tagging and vacinating thier calf. Our neighbors have a old stock rack from a pickup mounted on thier skid steer loader and they set it over the calf to tag and work them, they say it works very well. Pics would be great if you have one you really like. Thanks,Terry

Subject: RE: ATV calves, New Tec or Valhauer

New Mexico
NewTec out of Hull IA. 866-369-0505, handles good, customizing to carry calves say: ( fold down triangle plywood floor on right rear corner, then small swing gate...so the calf can just ride along ).

New Tec mounts on the right side of the 4x....

The main one we use is New Tec ( they were perhaps the first to manufacture one )

Also Valhauer out of Hosmer SD 605-283-2629 or 605-216-2655
Mounts on the left of the 4x.
Certainly looks heavier, with higher side panels than the New Tec.

Have not tried this one..it looks good.

Also I would NOT get they're optional calf carry / working small pen which they mount inside ( right rear ).

Just make that a fold down cornner triangle etc ( see new tec customize note above ) and to the left rear corner ( since it's a left mount pen ).

Object of the fold down corner is when that's folded up You have more pen room ( say you trap and work 3 or 4 all at the same time ).

Object of keeping those calves clear to the outsides and rear is the cow keeps her head right there while Your transporting the calf...that way she's not helping you drive the 4x!

Columbia City, Indiana
I've heard of guys using an old bale ring, carrying it out to the calf with the skid loader, then setting it down with the calf in the middle where you can get off the skid loader, tag the calf, then climb back in and drive away. Seems like it would work.

New Mexico
Make a 4' x 5' pen on hinges, fold down when you need it, catch the calf with the pickup etc.

Handy thing is You open the drivers door right to the calf...all away from the cow etc.

We build the calf catchers for Vilhauer Sales. We are sure you would not be disappointed in this catcher. If you have any questions, please call Dave at 605-380-6310. The people that buy our catchers say they wish they would have had this 20 years ago. The catcher is built of all welded construction, it has a foot pedal closer for the front gate. It has an optional rear gate w/carrier. It also has 2 ball hitches for easy off and on to the ATV, a foot stand, it will fit on the back of pickups for easy hauling.
