What is it with sound traveling? UP trains through Ames are way louder than usual. Hear every car with flat spot on wheel.

Whenever a front is coming in we can hear trains from several miles away. Sounds like the tracks run thru our barnlot. Normally never hear then other than occasional barely audible whistle if the wind is in the right direction.

Wife gets a headache whenever we get close to a windmill farm, I don't notice a thing.

There is a track about 5 miles from my farm. If I hear that train, it will storm in the next couple days. If it is real loud, bad storm.

The windmills must effect different people different. My son has them very close to his place. I have been working in the yard when wind starts. Hear the windmills a bit. When wind gets stronger, the sound of wind in the trees gets louder than windmills. I hardly notice the noise. Some people just go plain crazy over the noise.

Had to go move tractors from farm to farm 1 day few years back. 9520 Deere, fired up, run it to 13-1400 RPM, as I'm climbing the steps after hooking the pickup behind the cultivator, I could hear the swish. The tower was 200 ft to the right of the tractor as I climbed steps on the left side of the tractor. 5 feet away from me is a big green engine running at a high idle and I can hear the swish from beyond that?!?!?! Wind towers make terrible neighbors.

Heck no I do not!!!!! A different company came to our area 15 yrs ago, wanted my parents to sign badly, they wanted the home farm, and the 2x100ac farms up the road, which I own 1 now, brother owns the other. They REALLY wanted the 200. Anyway, parents said 'no thanks', they were back a few times offering more $$$$ every time, dad finally said "if you're willing to offer that much now why didn't you offer that much to start. And how much higher are you willing to go?"

Then my next door neighbor decided to get into them, but he fell apart too.

All in all, I can't stand them, want nothing to do with them. They ruin neighborhoods, if they're so good they why don't all these companies put them in their own back yards!!!!

Just some guessing, but I wonder if there are different style blades? I have no idea how many different wind generator blade manufacturers there are. Maybe some blades are designed to operate quieter, but maybe they aren't as efficient or have as long of a service life, or are more expensive to build?

Blades used on home fans sure can vary in shape, the amount of air moved and the fan noise. There can be considerable difference between the amount of air that the old Emerson Electric fans can move (some with the grill wire so far apart you could put your hand into the fan), and what some plastic box fans can move. I've seen the old Emerson fans, maybe 16" oscillating size, that you could hardly hear run, but they were really moving the air and spinning fast. I've seen some 20" plastic box fans that sounded like a Cessna 152 ready for take off and you could hardly feel the air moving right in front of them when they were on high. Those fans have totally different blade designs. Maybe wind turbine blade designs have similar impact on the intensity and pitch of the swooshing/etc that is heard, but the variances in the design which cause the noise differences are not as easily seen?

Wind companies are leasing ground in our county now. My neighbors have signed their land up. Setbacks are only 1400' from a residence. Needless to say, I'm worried. A lot of people starting to complain about the project and raising heck with the county commissioners. I hope they can at least get the setback distance increased.

the "anti's" here said for the better of the safety of the people the setacks needed to be 1600 feet

what a crook at 16oo feet, it makes it so one tower would not sit on a section

now they are complaining they have no money. but we have a ton of dead ash trees waiting to fall on power lines. and they have no money to cut them

way more chances of a dead tree falling on someone, then a turbine falling over "here"

we have a "dump " here in 1989 they had a terrible stink of how bad the house values were goin got take a hit

so the ones in a 2 mile circle got a 25% discount

then in a few years there was house in the circle selling for more than the original price

People just have to much time on there hands, to complain about what happens on there street

If a 1600' setback won't allow a tower to sit on a square section then your area is too populated to have wind turbines. In my opinion, 1600' is way too close to a home to have a 500' tall windmill with rotating blades that cover a 2 acre sweep.
The tree issue sounds like a county problem to me. Our county and electric companies trim trees close to their power lines.
The wind farms in my state have a lifetime tax abatement and will pay zero taxes so it won't put money in the county's pocket, just the land owner and wind company.
A dump benefits everyone in the county and only takes up one location so that is in no way comparable to a wind farm. Come on, do you think it will increase home values having a windmill 1600' away??
As for complaining about what happens on your street: You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything. Like letting a multi-billion dollar company pull wool over ones eyes and take full control of their land for 90 years.
