Subject: Goat Feeding Advice

West Central Illinois
I have 11 Boer bucks that are 5 months old and weigh around 60 lbs. Looking to feed them until the first part of December when the Christmas market picks up. My plan is to give them free choice alfalfa hay and work them up to free choice whole corn. Please let me know if that will work or anything that may work better. TIA

Are they inside, dry lot, pasture?? Do you know what they have been eating? Are they new to you?
I would be cautious of the alfalfa if they have not been eating it, sheep and goats are known to bloat on alfalfa.
Also urinary calculi can be a big deal leading to death esp in wethers but can cause problems in bucks so I would feed a balanced diet not just corn as the only grain.
I really do not know how long it would take to 'build up' calculi to have a problem but I would not chance it.
Deworming is critical as is coccidia control and c/d/t

Never had goats on full feed but any change in diet needs to be SLOW. I would think most markets want them 80 ish lbs of lighter do you know what the ideal weight is?

Free choice alfalfa and free choice whole corn is exactly what we do after weaning with our Boer goats. Good idea to vaccinate with something like BarVac CDT and worm also.

Worm only if needed. Google FAMACHA. We follow several of the practices on the wormx site: https://www.wormx.info/

We are feeding a bunch out now. Feeding 35/35/30 blend of corn/soybean hulls plus a 36% balancer pellet from ADM. the ADM pellet gets us the minerals and Ammonium Chloride to keep down calculi. Need to work up slow, but we are feeding about 1.5-1.75#/hd/day to our 60# bucks while they're out on pasture.

Definitely vaccinate for CD/T if you haven't already

I think you can budget 4# of feed for 1# gain. Most markets are going to be looking for 60-80 kids

No good markets in your area for kids? 60lbs is what there is most demand for here and a lot from here go to Chicago. Christmas is ~108 days away and on full feed you would add about 50-75 lbs, that makes a very undesirable kid "here". Sell em and buy some 25 lb ones to sell into Christmas market.

Anyway we feed ours a grain mix (100lb r700 pellet, 560 lb ddgs, 1340 lb cracked corn and 5lb ammonium chloride) free choice along with best hay we have. We get a cdt into them then work them up to full feed over 7-10 days. I use the same mix in their creep areas so its not much change to get them rolling.

They seem to bring the same per lb from 60 to 100. I'm really wanting to catch the first part of the Christmas uptick in price. May grow them slow for a couple more weeks then work towards full feed. May sell sometime in November

I grind my own mix. 800# Hubbard supplement, 50# salt, 50# deccox, remainder in cracked corn. That's for a 2 ton batch. Bucket feed twice a day and you won't have sorting issues. I free choice salt and sodium bicarbonate along with this feed. They'll go through the sodium bicarbonate when they're on full feed. I feed free choice hay as well. Ration ends up being about 14% protein.
