Subject: Cover crop roots in tile???

NW Indiana
I had a tile guy tell me he wouldn't plant cover crops if they were free. He showed me some pictures and I was kind of shocked. An 8 inch tile with 40 inches of coverage was 1/3 full of roots from a cover crop that was planted in july after the field got flooded out in 2015. Radishes/clover/annual Rye was the mix. Has anyone else seen anything like this? He was really concerned about the 4 inch laterals that were 30 inches deep. The owner stopped planting cover crops after they dug up a few tiles. Any thoughts?
