Death comes to us all. Life's but a walking shadow
I was just looking at quotes & basis for central Iowa. The ethanol plant quotes aren't too bad, minus 30, minus 40 but the elevators' quotes are mostly in the 3.00-3.20 range. $3.10 times 190 bushel is $589 gross revenue. Now we know that 50-60% of the land Iowa farmers farm isn't owned. I'm guessing that land rents there are at least $200, more likely $250-$300. Seed costs $50-$75 per acre, fertilizer the better part of $200, pesticide $20/A applied, fuel another $20-$40, and wear & tear on machinery is likely at least $25/A. That's somewhere in the neighborhood of $600. Granted some of you are still making money but realistically, how many and how much?
And how many of you are willing to bet against another similar year? I'm genuinely curious, in a skeptical sort of way. Where am I wrong. I will appreciate your honest & open response.
