You have to be with them to direct their energy and time into productive things.
Dogs dig and chew - they are dogs. He is a BIG dog so doesn't take him long to make a big impression on what he decides to do. At 2 a Mastiff is still a pup so again need to direct his energy into something useful. If he is outside alone there is no way to do that. It is like leaving an 8 year boy alone, you think he is going to play in his room quietly all day waiting for you? NOT Gonna Happen.
