2500ft^2 sounds like it would be plenty of house for two kids, I'd test it out for awhile before giving up. The reason I never want to own an older farmhouse is they are drafty and poorly insulated in many cases. With a house as big as you are saying and that far north it will cost a small fortune to heat. I'd take a look at their energy bills before going to far.
