+1 to the buying new root crowns.
I transplanted a patch 4 or 5 years ago. Haven't been satisfied with it, so last year I bought 125 crowns and by mid summer I had 123 glorious ferns growing. I went with improved varieties including Jersey Knight, Jersey Giant, and Purple passion.
