Like your wife's cousin there comes a time when fighting the inevitable is not worth the misery.
I also have had relatives in their 80ies that said no thanks to heroic treatment to delay the inevitable.
Usually the request is to 'keep me comfortable'
In the last days there are pain controls that will stop the misery.
