Subject: Deere 6076 Injection Pump Timing

Mount Vernon, WA
We're working on a 4755 right now in our shop. Primary complaint is low power, which was confirmed on our dyno. We went to check injection pump timing (among other things), and found the timing pin in the flywheel housing to be sheared off. Attempts to grab it to get it out were fruitless. We then proceeded to drop a valve on top of #1 piston to find TDC that way. Ultimately, we found the timing to be retarded by about 15 degrees, which leads me to think that whoever put the pump on the last time (it's a reman) simply winged it and called it good.

That said, I have two questions:

1) Do these timing pins get sheared off frequently? I'm assuming someone hit the starter with the pin in place, as I can't see any other way for that to happen. Do you think the starter could do that?
2) I got some test plans from the folks at our local pump shop. Injection pump timing computes to 27 degrees BTDC. Does that sound about right for a 6076 engine?

Thanks
