Franklinton, LA | In November 2013 I had a logging contractor clear cut some 18 year old loblolly pine. In December 2014 this area was planted in longleaf pine. I spent 8 years in 4-H Club and FFA getting lectured on why it was bad to burn the forest. Now the NRCS claims you should burn longleaf pine every few years. This morning I had a crew from the LA Department of Agriculture and Forestry burn the area. This fire should kill the faster growing loblolly pine plus some hardwoods that came up in this area. These faster growing trees will smother the slower growing longleaf pine if they are allowed to stay.
The LA Dept. of Ag people spent about 1.5 hours and did a good job.
I think the longleaf pine will look a lot better by late April. They look pretty bad after the fire.
