Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa | The story I've always heard is that Mr Gabeline got out of the service with pretty much nothing, and no family support, either financial or emotional. He made up his mind that he was going to "amount to something", and began working and amassing land and assets. He owned and farmed many, many acres, owned elevators and a trucking company and other enterprises. There are others on this board that know much more of the history than do I, and maybe they will comment. But here's the sale:
