Subject: RE: Tile Spacing

For all of you that mentioned 100 ft and split later, you have never been to the RRV and worked with Fargo clay. The guys from MI and NW OH have similar soils and understand. If I were designing it, I would more than likely push you towards the 40 ft 3". You may have to come back in and split some to 20 ft in some depressional areas. At 60 ft you will probably have to split most of it. Make sure you continue to maintain your ditches as well. Tile alone will not make you happy. Drainage coefficient is determined and/or limited by the size of the main. Drainage intensity is how fast you can get water to the main. It is rare you will fill a 3" at 40 ft spacings or a 4" at 60 ft in this type of soil. However the narrow spacing will have a higher drainage intensity in the same soil due to less distance to travel to the tile. The tile size will have little to no effect on this. The old deep and wide philosophy does not work in the heavy clay subsoils of this area.
