With 3 inches you put more pipe but more shallow.

With spacement 60 you collect from a 50% more area than 40, so you have 50% more flow.

If 3 inches is OK for 40 space, with 60 you need a pipe of 3.67 to have 50% more flow capacity, as that pipe doesn't exist you go to 4 inches wich has 78% more flow capacity than 3.

The only difference is that to have water table a same level with 3 than with 4, with 4 pipe you must go more deepest.

Edited to say, I don't know if the pipe price is included in your comment "3 inches is 10,000 cheaper", if not, check this point because as I said 3 inches x 40 uses 50% more pipe than 4 inches x 60.
