Subject: RE: Dry land corn planting date?

We have moved later and later here. I'm convinced that June is the optimum planting date depending on day length. My goal is to plant as late as possible with average GDU's still getting me to black layer by October 5th. That would be 3 days prior to my average first freeze. For my hybrids that means I like to start 113 day corn May 15th -May 25th. We slowly transition to shorter season as we go usually finishing around June 10th 98 day corn. That gets most of the reproduction stages in our corn on the cooling side of summer. Over the last 2 years of doing this we have seen yield increases and in some cases dramatic. We have people 20 miles south of us that have been doing this for 5 or so years and the results are clear, late planted corn is the best. They used to tell us you couldn't plant irrigated corn after May 10th here. Our irrigated corn last year was planted May 18th and was very good. I'm pretty opinionated about this if you can't tell haha.
