If they take a percentage of the total field what drive do they have to try new things and increase the yield to get a return? I think your intention is good but it doesn't sound like they will be able to truly manage it and have a learning ecperience. What motive would they have to add extra fertilizer if they can't recoup the cost cause they take the whole field average.
