Just did what your planning to do last month. With GPS on our phone it was pretty easy to get around. The streets have names but they usually don't have street signs. The locals don't use their turn signals very much either. Otherwise driving was not really a problem. The back highways are narrow.
Things to see....The forts at El Morro. Very impressive considering they were built in the 1600's. Old San Juan is right by there. Not that difficult to drive to Old San Juan and walk around. Weekdays are best...less crowded.
The Bacardi Rum Factory and tour.
The Areicebo radio telescope. Fascinating and a very good visitors center.
El Younke rain forest.
We did not see the bioluminescent pools as the water had been rough and we were advised it would not be good to see at that time. Could be OK now.
All in all, Puerto Rico is one of the better islands in the Caribbean for sights to see.
