Hansell, Iowa | Hey guys don't post much here, more in machinery talk so a little out of my comfort zone here and looking for advice! My brother and I are looking into buying some Holstein bull calfs from a dairy or at a sale depending where we can get the cheapest price. Our plan is to cut and or band them ourselves and feed them to market weight and try to turn a profit. Looking at 70-90lbs calves. My question is what is the rough amount of bushels it takes to feed a Holstein to the desired weight? Or rough cost per head. Just figuring what my "break even" number would be. Would we be better off with a Holstein/beef cross for a faster turn around time, rather than just a Holstein steer? Am I crazy for wanting to try this or should I just stick to my corn and beans?? Thinking of starting around 40 head and seeing how we do from there. We have a full concrete yard with a shed and bunks and potentially 2 creep feeders as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, totally new to this. Sorry for all the "dumb" questions.
Thanks!!
