Subject: Organic Matter in sod

SW So Dakota
Last week the topic was organic matter and someone said virgin sod should be off the charts high in OM. Well we just took samples on a quarter that has been native grass forever that we are going to put a pivot on and the OM is 1.6%. The pivots we have been farming for 45 years are basically the same so that tells me there's nothing we can do to build or destroy our sandy soil OM. About the best thing we can do is spread manure which we do where we can. I took a Soils class at SDSU back in the early 80's and we had to bring a sample from home. I'll never forget the looks and giggles I got from the guys when they saw my soil sample. If I remember right it was like 1.5% OM but the K levels were off the chart high like sands always are.
