West Central Wisconsin | I thought I was turning the corner on my sick group of calves until tonight. I lost another one and several look pretty sad. Vet wanted me to keep pulling sick ones and treat until my tissue sample results came back. Decided tonight I couldn't wait. Planned to put the whole group through the shoot, check temps, and treat any that had a fever or other signs. I figured that I would need to treat about half. Well, I ran out of zactran. There is still 25 head to go. PuT them in the sick pen for tonight. Only three animals did not have a fever. Some that I thought looked fine had the highest temps. It was truly shocking to me.
The group ii mass treated at arrival have hardly missed a beat and are eating like crazy. Sick group will be going back to dry hay only for a week.
Makes me a firm believer in mass treating. I have used wayyy more antibiotics on thus group than if I would have treated all right away.
