Once income gets low enough, the ACA subsidies really cut that down. In Illinois kids get very good coverage through the state programs. Honestly, making 35k and 50k don't make a lot of difference in out of pocket costs for a family of 5. At 35k, health care costs out of pocket are near zero. Taking a health care subsidy ain't any less honorable than taking a crop insurance subsidy.
