Subject: RE: Notrigen from hay.

In the 70s there was an ISU extension bulletin based on ISU research that said corn after two or three year producing alfalfa didn't respond to added nitrogen the first year and might not the second corn year after plowing the alfalfa under. They didn't admit the corn number or its breeding and that may have had an effect.

I'm not surprised that red clover also supplied as much nitrogen and organic matter. The nirvana for cover crops.

That ISU extension bulletin isn't available any more. Way back before I went no till and when I was selling alfalfa hay I did a 6 year rotation, three years alfalfa, then corn, beans, corn and bought only MAP, no nitrogen. I took alfalfa out of the rotation after a horse hay buyer screwed me with bad checks and rejected baled hay that didn't get returned. And I figured what corn could return way more than the alfalfa to easily pay for buying and applying nitrogen instead of growing the nitrogen. The alfalfa was good for the organic matter on the farm.
