I run 6 to 8 tabs in IE11 all the time without issue. Basically, something must be running that shouldn't be.
Go to the Tools menu and click on Add-ons. In the Show box, choose each item and look at what are in the active lists. If it's not from Microsoft, google it and see what kinds of results you get.
By selecting one of them, you can disable it for testing purposes.
