Subject: Kansas Pioneer Grain sorghum

Hoisington, KS
Never planted Pioneer milo as I have seen the neighbor's fall down year after year, but this year it all appears to be standing better than anything else. I know they've probably worked at improving their hybrids standability problems over the years, but this year I think a lot of the lodging problems were caused by sugarcane aphid and not moisture stress at the wrong time. I don't understand Pioneer's numbering system as it relates to maturity, anyone have any pointers on which varieties have the best stalk strength ratings ? We had lodging issues with almost every variety this year which I contribute to the SCA and not spraying in a timely manner.
