New London, Wisconsin | I'm very sorry to hear of this. R. A. Bob Hoover was a true class act. He has always been known as a pilot's pilot. He held the highest respect not only because of his true talent, but more because he was always polite helpful and kind to all around him.
I sort of met him a few times. Not introduced by name, but I did help him push his Rockwell P-51 on the flight line once, ( I was walking by and he asked me and a few others to help). Two or three years ago I heard him speak at EAA and he wasn't mike'd well so the crowd couldn't hear him very well. Several people walked out. I hated to see that so I talked to four EAA staff until I found one willing to do something to improve the sound quality.
Chuck Yeager got more credit from the general public, and he had loads of talent, but Bob was in a league of his own, far beyond Yeager.
