Subject: RE: growing rye for seed

NE Iowa
I did what you are thinking last year for the first time. Just looking for seed for myself and it turned out pretty good. Probably got about 50 bu/acre. I no-tilled 2 bu/acre of rye into a cornfield about first week of October. I had baled the cornstalks off the field first. I was worried about it lodging so went easy on the N apply about 55# per acre in the form of urea in the last week of March. In early March I frost seeded 10# of red clover and ended up with a good stand. Financially it probably faired as well as any other crop this year. 50 bu/acre of rye, 100 small squares of sraw, 1.5 ton of clover hay, and about 10" of regrowth that the cows grazed per acre. Will no-till that field to corn next year.
