Practiced welding by repurposing lots of older equipment.  Made baby pig feeders out of an old E-Z-Flow (doubt if anybody even remembers those) used the hitch to make a cart.  Made lots of sow feeders out of split water heater tanks with legs made from rasp bars from the combine after worn out.  Used lots of oil field pipe for different projects, split an old fuel tank to make a tray that fit on the fork lift to fill planters and drills.  Many others, doing this type of project can really improve welding skills.  I was surprised the firs time I welded on good new steel, found it very easy compared to having to spend so much time preparing old rusty stuff, and the bead just went into the new steel so much easier.
