I think there is a lot of both. The group I run with feeds about 20k between all of us. Equity drain has been phenomenal. Been feeding for thirty years and this is by far the worst trap we have all been caught in. None of us have bought large quanities of new inventory so there is a good amount of demand to come. Feel like once this turn is dead and gone memories will fade and we all will get back in. Nobody talking about quitting or cutting back. All of us do some risk management obviously not enough this time. Biggest concern for half the group is packer capacity currently. On the ranching side our peers locally have sold half and are holding half. Just doesn't make sense to sell calves this cheap with feed supplies at home. Quick thought. Two or three years ago when the USDA and FSA paid drought money to ranchers in this area it came a year late while they were selling calves for record prices. So they didn't need hfr sales income because of up to $300 per cow income from govt. That's what enticed them to hold so many hfrs back. It really skewed things. So this to shall pass.
