I suspect you do understand the magnitude of the drop and it is not pretty. To compare it with other years will not do any good to your bottom line except to possibly save face.

Bottom line is that you can look at the price of corn and see similar losses following 2012. You can then look at the price of hogs and see similar losses except it took more time than corn and less than cattle.

Why would you expect to see feeder cattle to be exempt from such loses? It simply takes more time to replenish cattle inventories than corn or hogs - that is about it.


you had fats losing $400-$700 per head-so you took any equity left and burned it up-going into this year its $100-$400 head losss-usual turn is 3 turns loss -feeder wakes up-with the huge loss it only took 1 turn for some 2 for others-only thing that can be adjusted is feeder cost in a feedlot-those $4 # steer calves@$1600 a head were never worth $1200-thats $400 to much-cut that into 1/2 $600 as all the cash reserves are gone

That 500# steer is worth $600 in todays realm--It takes longer to replenish equity then cattle
