That would explain damage ... for a long list of reasons. A $100 plug-in protector is similar to a $10 one. They know if they increase the list price, then sales will increase to people who are easiest to scam.
Your protector probably made it easier for a surge to find earth ground destructively via those appliances. Surge choose one that was THE easiest connection to earth. Protector compromised superior protection in that appliance. Then a surge destroyed that appliance. Damage directly traceable to who bought and installed a near zero joules protector. AND who did not properly earth something completely different that (unfortunately) is also called a protector.
