NC Indiana | We usually bag corn silage, but the corn is nearly all brown and is in full dent with the weather we've had. We also planted 11 acres of forage sorghum after barley that is still heading/pollinating/filling to chop for silage as well. We have never raised the sorghum, and we're not sure what kind of tonnage we'll get off of those acres. The dealer said they generally see 20-30 tons/ac, I'm hoping for 12-15 ton/ac. We generally chop 13-17 acres of corn silage to carry our cows and feed calves from November thru April. Should we still chop corn even with it being dry, or wait and try to chop part of a wagon load of dry corn silage and top the load with sorghum once it frosts or matures (guessing frosts at this point with the forecast they are showing), or shell the corn and add it back into the silage as we mix feed?
Also, we have roughly 4-500 bu of barley, at what point in our feeder calves diets should we look to mix it in and at what rate/lbs/% of body weight?
Thanks!
