Subject: Spreading your own Fert/Lime VRT?

Kansas
Been doing a little research on spreading our own dry fertilizer and lime. Did some searches on here and have found many good points and ideas but have a few more specific questions.

First off for quite awhile now we have been hiring our grid sampling/spreading done, they have a three bin spreader capable of variable rating all three. Overall have been pretty happy with this system just looking to do it ourselves for hopefully cost savings, flexibility and simply just knowing it gets done right.

We couldn't justify a spreader with the three product capabilities so that's my first question could we make variable rating one product at a time work? How do you handle it? Two passes or are you happy blending per farm and then varirating that blend? Just wonder if we would be happy going this route.

Do you do your own sampling and prescription writing or do you hire somebody to do that part for you?

Tell me about your spreading equipment? How do you like your setup?

Also just to clarify this is in a corn/soybean rotation.

I'm sure I'll think of a couple more questions but these are some of my biggest at this point.

Thanks in advance. Always appreciate the help.
