W Texas | I grow barley and have been accustomed to either dry grain/straw or whole crop silage. I have calves and beef cows and can utilize any combination of barley.
I would like to try high moisture grain for the calves and then immediately cut the straw for cows ( I have a shelbourne header.) I grow alfalfa also, FWIW. Am set up for grain and straw but have to hire out silage.
I have never harvested high moisture grain. Can a combine separate the grain from the awns? The variety I grow has long awns, but perhaps any that get into the final product would soften in the pit?
I have silage pits and grain handling equipment, so the only thing I believe I need to go high moisture is a high moisture grain mill. I have a roller mill now. Any recommendations?
Does regular hulled barley at 25-35% moisture flow out of the combine and out of the grain cart? I am guessing it can't be left in the cart or combine overnight, but otherwise flows just fine.
Any advice appreciated.
