Beresford, SD
Never raised barley.......I do know rye or trit would work great in your situation. Yes, to your other question...hand feed a few pounds (3/4 to 1# per 100# of body weight) of rolled corn mixed with a supplement once a day......it pays. You will not need a supplement for protien, but for a carrier of your vitamins and minerals as well as an ionaphor. Feed a good salt free choice. I personally hate mineral fed free choice on rye graze out. Intake is way to variable. Tried just mineral/salt this year on my spring rye graze out........tried to control mineral (w bovatec) intakes with salt. Worked fair, graining once a day....wich I did last year was way more effective. Gains.....1.75-2 with out grain......2.5 with grain.
