Looks like you took off the brickmoulding. There should be brickmoulding attached to the door jamb, and then the storm door attaches to that. Although the main door was only held in by the brickmoulding, which is not the proper install, it worked. The brickmoulding is the exterior trim for the main door.
The trim for the inside is wrong, too, according to construction practices.
