West Tennessee | Last Saturday the feederhouse belt (powers the reverser) exploded on our 9770. We looked it over (obviously not close enough) and put another $460 belt on it. Yesterday the same thing and got MUCH more serious about checking it over. There was slop in the pulleys on the reverser and the reverser was super hot. Put a new pulley assembly ($1,900) on it and another new belt and changed the oil. Hopefully good to go today.
That got me to thinking about the fixed speed drive. We're running a 644 head on hilly ground so not running fast. We usually run around 500 acres of corn and 1,500 acres of beans. Can we get by running a fixed speed drive in the corn? Since the original pulleys only lasted around 1,600 hours I don't care to replace them again if I can avoid it. We grease the reverser regularly but don't know that the owners before us did. | |
