I suppose you know that if you are really disabled, social security will pay you benefits.
Not many farmers carry disability insurance, you can't insure for a normal income, so remember that.
The thing is, SS will only pay if you have paid in enough to qualify. I don't qualify for SS disability because of that. Now that I am disabled and don't have an earned income, I pay in a meager amount each year based on patronage dividends from the electric, telephone and farm co-ops. At 54, I have a ways to go before I can collect regular SS at 62.
I encourage everyone to put some into SS each year for this reason, and get a "good" long term disability policy if you can. I used to feel bulletproof and never thought I would end up with the major heart and lung problems I have today. |
