Eastern Shore of MD | This is from what I've learned from the Reids as far as marketing goes....
Marketing has the same principals at play as our corn and soybeans do; supply and demand. Only with this crop, its not really a global market per se. Its more regional, say, east coast. Timing of harvest is critical and that starts with proper planting as well as weather. If melon crops south of us in the Carolinas or Georgia are late and then come off the same time as ours, there is an over supply and prices tumble. If they have a disease problem and ours yield great then prices go up. There is potential for great ROI with melons but, as with anything, there is a LOT of risk. There is a lot more to it than that, I'm sure, but that is the basics. | |
