I agree with the statement above that your Mac guy is lazy. I am still running a core 2 laptop that still is quite capable. If you are still running a base configuration of 2gb of ram I would suggest upgrading your ram to 8gb. Just guessing but if your computer is a mid-2009 model, a 8gb PC3-8500 SO-DIMM will run less than $50. It is easy to install. If that doesn't improve the "snappiness" of the computer, The next thing I would do is backup your entire hard drive to a external drive and then do a clean install of of the latest version of OSX.
A lack of ram will slow things down but if the rest of the computer is still functioning $50 is a inexpensive fix.
I was still running a Old G5Mac (pre-intel chip) as my weather server up until a few weeks ago. It is a tank, can't run any of the new software on it but even being 12 years old it still worked great for what I needed it for. It still runs fine but I decided to upgrade weather station software which required the intel based processor.

That being said if your are looking at a new Mac, do not overlook the refurb store on the apple site. Same warranty as new, eligible for AppleCare and they have been completely gone through. Every Mac, iPad, and iPod I have purchased over the last several years I have purchased through the refurb site. No problems with any of them.
