Subject: RE: organic no-till soybeans

Kalona, IA

Wow, those beans are clean! Drilled or planted?

I "was" in the 1st yr of transition to Organic and drilled my beans into mature rye and rolled it several days later.

Lessons learned:

I learned why rye needs to be drilled heavier then 1 bu acre.

I learned that you need to drill beans well over 200,000 pop.

A planter may be a better option then a drill if it doesn't rain for 3 wks after planting also cultivating "may" be an option in attempted rescue.

Fertility needs to be adequate to grow both rye and beans.

Grass is not much of a problem weed in a rye CC, may  be because it was in it's 1st yr. of transition and was controlled last yr. with herbicide.

Any thin areas of CC are very susceptible to TWH coming through and since the stand of beans is VERY thin shading is extremely slow due to low fertility and lack of inter-plant competition.

Rescue treatment for broad leaves are  NOT cheap.

I will have probably the lowest yielding worst looking beans in the state!
