NW WI | I'm going to be putting in a cover crop after wheat in my corn-soybean-winter wheat rotation. My plan so far has been to put in a tillage radish, hairy vetch, barley, and cereal rye. My goal is improve soil structure, provide a little N for the corn, and keep the weeds down. I've been told that I shouldn't plant rye because the C:N ratio will be too high, and barley will cause head scab problems for my wheat. It was suggested I plant oats instead. My question is, will the barley really cause problems for me? It will be dead in few months when it freezes and I won't have wheat growing there for two years. Does the rye really cause that much of a problem with N? Seems like that's what everyone uses.
Any advise? | |
